Set in Stratford-on -Avon
in 1613, The Herbal Bed is based on actual events which took place
that summer. William Shakespeare's daughter, Susanna, is publicly
accused of having an improper liaison with a married neighbour and
family friend, Rafe Smith. Her accuser later recants, but to clear
her name Susanna and her husband, a much respected physician, sue for
slander through the court of Worcester Cathedral.
Faced with conflicting
evidence and political divisions within the Church, the outcome of
the case becomes anything but certain as the action moves inexorably
to a nail-biting climax.!
