The play
centred on the household of Bob and Jeff,
a perfectly normal couple who happen to be gay (And not at all camp).
The relationship is completely accepted by Bob's family - all, that
is apart from his mum Vera, who appears blissfully unaware that her
son is 'otherwise inclined.'
On the
surface Bob and Jeff live a cosy life but
following the death of Jeff's mother Jeff gets restless and
the two of them head off to Malta for a holiday to talk things over.
The play
joins them as they return the worse for wear,
with
a story to tell, to find their house full of Bob's family having a
few crises of their own...
Can Bob's
family rescue the situation? And will Bob be able to finally tell
the seemingly ignorant Vera that the straight and narrow is not the
life for her favourite little boy?
What is the
play like? I'd echo the words of the Daily Mail when it reported:
'(The play
is) shot through with the most bounteous comic invention, and with
moments so intensely moving they should make grown men cry'.
Straight
and Narrow was written by Jimmie Chinn and ran as a successful West
End production starring Nicolas Lyndhurst as Bob, in 1992
