New auditorium seats
arrive - but installation is delayed.
The Little
Theatre Gateshead has secured a full compliment of
replacement seating for the main auditorium, benefiting from
the recent closure of a local cinema.
The purchase
of the former Warner Brothers multiscreen complex in Manors,
Newcastle by Northumbria University presented an opportunity
the Little Theatre Directors could not miss.
Following
careful negotiation, the University agreed to supply
approximately 200 seats to replace the current facilities
which are believed to be over 70 years old.
The removal
and transportation of the seats was undertaken in September
in an operation which involved approximately 25 volunteers, all
of whom were Progressive Players members.
The project
was coordinated by Little Theatre Manager Robbie Carruthers
who paid tribute to the 'dedication and commitment' of those
who gave their time and energy to complete this difficult
job in one day.
Replacing the
old seating, which has become a big part of the image of the
Little Theatre Gateshead is a sad event however the new
seats will provide more comfort, will be easier to maintain
and have a significantly higher fire safety rating.
Delay
Despite
securing the seats, the actual installation process will not
commence until a suitable 'time slot' is available when the
theatre is not in use for a production. It is felt at
least a week is needed to fully complete the changeover and
the soonest available window is in February 2005.
